The Sword in the Stone (Disney, 1963)
The Once and Future King (T.H. White, 1958)
To get ready for our year with British Literature, we will be reading "Sword in the Stone" over the summer! This story is the first section in T.H. White's The Once and Future King. It is the best-known of the four sections, mainly because of Disney's 1963 animated version. "Sword in the Stone" tells the story of King Arthur's childhood as an unknown, wannabe squire for a mediocre knight. The story is mainly concerned with the lessons Arthur is taught by the wizard Merlyn--lessons that eventually help him to be a good king. You should consider these to be the beginnings of your lessons in how to be a good adult.

You can get a copy from the library, purchase a copy for relatively cheap (should be less than $5) from Half-Price Books, or read it online using the link below. However you read it, make sure you read it well enough to discuss in class as soon as we return in August. Happy reading!
